BPM to song length calculator

How long 16 bars really is at your tempo, and how many bars fit in the length you want.

Bars are how producers and engineers talk; minutes are how platforms and listeners do. This converts between them for any tempo. The table underneath blocks out a whole song at that tempo, so you can see where the hook lands before you write it.

Those bars last 0:27

The maths, if you want it

One beat lasts 60 ÷ BPM seconds. In 4/4, one bar is four beats, so a bar lasts 240 ÷ BPM seconds. At 140 BPM that is 1.71 seconds per bar; 16 bars is 27.4 seconds; 64 bars is 1:50. Half-time drums do not change the count: the bar is still the bar, the drums just hit half as often.

Why it matters

  • Streaming counts a play at 30 seconds. An 8-bar hook at the top reaches the listener inside that window at any tempo above 64 BPM.
  • A “three-minute song” at 150 BPM is about 112 bars; at 90 BPM it is 67. Same length, very different amount of writing.
  • Engineers quote edits in bars. Knowing “cut 8 bars” is “cut 13 seconds” at your tempo makes the conversation quick.
